Sound Art in Games




Başar Ünder, game and film composer, sound designer and founder of the audio production studio Sonik Butik, based in Istanbul. Başar Ünder has been composing music and designing sound for games since 2008. His works include three feature films and over twenty game titles including the mobile casual hit iSlash by Duello Games. In 2006, he was invited to Institut International de Musique Electroacoustique de Bourges (IMEB) as a resident composer funded by UNESCO Aschberg Bursaries for Artists. In 2014 he was awarded for the Best Music at the most prestigious film festival in Turkey, the 51st International Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival and he also contributed to the Anthology of Turkish Experimental Music 1961-2014 album by Sub Rosa with his work Diving. In 2017 he became a member of the European Film Academy. He is currently conducting his doctoral research at CeReNeM, Centre for Research in New Music, University of Huddersfield.

Atmosphere elements in games and films are considered as an important part of the immersion and there’s an extensive narrative potential in building creative and experimental soundscapes. Award winning film and game composer Başar Ünder will take you through sound art practices, experimental music, sound design and soundscapes in games while providing a snapshot of the types of games being made in Turkey. Ünder will also break down different styles of creative audio, introducing methods of colliding soundscapes, and look at how they can be used in games and films including examples from both worlds.
